“A Legacy of Equity, Excellence, and Community”
Welcome to José “Joe” May Elementary—where legacy and purpose guide our every step.
Our school is named after José “Joe” May, a Vietnam veteran, civil rights leader, and former Dallas ISD trustee who championed equity, education, and community empowerment. His unwavering belief in justice and access to opportunity continues to inspire our mission today.
Opened in 2016 as the final school from the district’s 2008 bond program, Joe May Elementary was built through community advocacy to serve the growing needs of northwest Dallas—designed not only with students in mind, but with sustainability and innovation at its core.
But this school is more than a building. It’s a living symbol of resilience and hope. From overcoming early environmental challenges with transparency and courage to becoming a hub of academic excellence and cultural pride, José “Joe” May Elementary stands as a testament to what’s possible when vision meets action.
As you join our school, you become part of that legacy. You are now entrusted with continuing the work of empowering learners, leading with equity, and honoring the values that brought this school to life.
Welcome—we’re glad you’re here.
